The need for a second urban center has resulted in the growth of Kapolei. Referred to as ‘Oahu’s 2nd City’, it’s essentially the overflow from Honolulu, but with a small-town atmosphere. It’s located far enough from Honolulu that it’s not in the middle of the hustle and bustle, but residents can still easily get there. The initial homes built in the area required homeowners to commute to Honolulu for work. The Ewa Plain is located in Kapolei. There is direct access to the H-1 freeway, making commuting a breeze.
Mehana at Kapolei includes Kahiku, Kawena, Awakea, Kukuna, La Hiki, Manawa, Nanala, Olina, Pulewa, and Pohakala.
Olina: Olina townhomes provide large living spaces, front and back lanais, and single-car garages. There are two and three-bedroom flats available and can have up to 1,800 square feet of living space.
Pohakala: Pohakala has two phases. Phase one was completed in 2016. The builder included flex spaces, so many retail businesses and cafes moved in, which is beneficial to homeowners. Phase two was completed in 2018 and is made up of affordable townhomes and condos. Surrounding the area is beautiful green spaces and walkways.

Homes in Kahiku at Mehana range from $350,000 and can cost up to $1.2 million. There are a variety of homes including condos, townhomes, and single-family homes for a variety of budgets.
Amenities
Public schools in Kapolei are among the newest on the entire island of Oahu. This provides many advantages for the students that attend them. Larger spaces, air conditioning, and more modern finishes are among the benefits. The schools are centrally-located, making them easy for everyone to get to.
Island Pacific Academy serves students from Junior Kindergarten to 12th Grade. There is a major focus on College Prep with an advanced curriculum. Kapolei Elementary has excellent feedback from students and parents. Kapolei Middle School is considered one of the best Middle School in Leeward Oahu, and it sits right in central Kapolei. Kapolei High School approaches learning as more independent and allows students to take control of their learning. They use a project-based teaching system. Leeward Community College (Pearl City) offers a wide range of programs, from arts to trades, culinary studies to television production. There are also Native Hawaiian programs as well. UH-West Oahu is the island’s main university and offers all traditional post-secondary programs.
Public transportation has been an opportunity for Kapolei to improve upon, and there is a train system currently being implemented. There are a few lines present, but not enough to meet the needs of residents.
Kapolei offers many options for shopping and groceries. Within a few minutes from most communities, grocers like Foodland and Safeway are available. There is also a Costco and organic supermarkets as well to meet all needs. The city has many big box stores, strip malls, local retailers, and malls.
Ka Makana Ali’i Mall is the 3rd largest mall on Oahu. It opened in 2016 and has over 90 retailers and restaurants, including big names like H&M, Forever 21, and Macy’s.
Kapolei Commons is another shopping option with retailers like Petco, Ross, Target, and Sports Authority with restaurants like Subway, Ruby Tuesday, and Dennys.
While there are no big hospitals within the boundaries of Kapolei, there are several medical clinics and care centers to utilize. Kaiser Permanente Kapolei Clinic, Kahi Mohala Behavioral Health, Kapolei Health Care Center, and Queen’s Health Care Center are all great options. The full emergency hospital is Queen’s Medical Center, West Oahu, in Ewa Beach.
Depending on who you talk to, West Oahu may be home to some of the best beaches on the island. Living in Kapolei puts residents in the heart of all the beach action. Ko Olina Beach Park has man-made lagoons, but they are well maintained with beautiful palm trees that provide shade. The blue waters are incredible and perfect for swimming. White Plains Beach is another excellent option for swimming but is also ideal for surfers and boogie boarders who are just starting out. There are lockers and change rooms on-site for the ultimate convenience. The sand is smooth and soft, making it perfect for soaking up the sun. Kalaeloa Beach Park, or Barber’s Point Beach Park, has campsites for residents to spend a night or two by the beautiful crystal waters.
There’s a lot of space to take advantage of in Kapolei, so there are many great activities to participate in. There is an in-line skating arena, paintball, go-karts, and so much more. Kroc Center offers typical community center activities like an art space, fitness classes, a multi-use gym, and a pool. There are many wonderful services to take advantage of. It’s the largest building like it in Hawaii. The Wet ‘N’ Wild water park is great for kids and adults alike. There’s a wave pool, slides, tube rides, and water tunnels. It’s a super popular place to have fun. Kapolei Regional Park is a large space with trees, playgrounds, and picnic tables. Go for a jog, play some soccer, or visit one of the many events that take place here year-round.
Kapolei is not the epitome of luxury and fine dining, but there are many great options to enjoy an excellent meal. There are many local gems that residents swear by, and even attract people from all over the island. No matter how much money you want to spend, there’s something for everyone.
Types of Homes at Mehana
While other parts of Oahu have seen explosive growth within the condo community, that is the opposite for Kapolei. While the city is growing, the primary home types are single-family homes and townhomes. Sticking with tradition and the Hawaiian lifestyle, low-rise neighborhoods are preferred and always have been.
Homes in Kapolei are on the affordable side, which makes them a great option for investment opportunities or vacation homes. There are also luxury properties available. There are a variety of home types for a variety of budgets, making it an ideal community to settle down in.
Future Communities
