Home to one of the best beaches in the world

Kailua Beach is really kind of considered the gateway to Lanikai. This is where most of the tourists get picked up, mostly because of the parking, because when you get into Lanikai and want to go to the beach there, there's really no place to park.

lanikai beach

Lanikai Beach really is a different world from Kailua Beach. The sand is whiter and it's finer. The wind is a little bit calmer. The water's a little bit more turquoise and calm as well, absent of the shorebreak at Kailua Beach. A few hundred yards off of the beach sits the Mokulua Islands, or as we locals like to say, "The Mokes."

Parking in Lanikai makes you go through a whirlwind of emotions. You see brake lights and you think, yes, score. Parking is a perk of living here, of course, while the rest of us drive around frustrated.

Things to do in Lanikai

As you leave Kailua Beach and head towards Lanikai, be sure to stop and grab an acai bowl at the Sunrise Shack. It's a really cool place and totally matches the Kailua vibe. The shop was started by a couple of surf brothers that to offer really healthy smoothies and acai bowls.

Just around the corner from the Sunrise Shack is Kailua Beach Adventures; where everybody comes to rent a kayak to paddle out to the Mokes from Kailua Beach.  After you cross the stream, you'll notice Buzz's Steakhouse, a restaurant fixture here in Kailua and just across the street you'll see the Lanikai Kai Canoe Club, one of the most well-known canoe clubs in the state. If you are somebody who loves fitness or you like to paddle or you like a lot of activity, Lanikai should be at the top of your list.

An outdoorsman's dream

People who love to walk, jog, run, ride a bike, really love Mokulua Drive; "the loop." It's a great place for exercise. You've also got one of the best hikes on the island called Lanikai Pillbox Hike; DO hike up here to see one of the best sunrises on Oahu one day. If you're a country club person, you can join the Mid Pacific Country Club.

It's one of the least stuffy country clubs on the island that offers a social membership for those looking to just enjoy the recreation, the exercise, and the food. If you're a golfer, you can take up the golf membership and enjoy one of the best golf courses on the island for views of the Mokulua Islands, the ocean, and the Koolau Mountains.

Lanikai Real Estate is laid back luxury

Lanikai is not a gated community, although it kind of acts like one. It's private, it's quiet, the prices here start at 1.2 to $1.6 million for a towhome and there's only one townhome community: Bluestone. That's really your only entry level community into this neighborhood. Other than that, don't expect anything to be less than $2 million for single family home with average prices being between $2,000,000 - $2,500,000 and $4,000,000 - $4,500,000.

It definitely doesn't stop there as beachfront homes will top out at about $23 million. The homes types here are plantation style cottages to luxurious coastal modern estates.Lanikai really has this wonderful relationship between indoor and outdoor living. It's quiet, it's quaint. It's luxurious Beach Island living.

Lanikai History

Lanikai has an interesting history. The actual name of this neighborhood is Kaha, and Kaha means to tie together like a lei, which makes me think it was on purpose that the way that we loop around Mokulua Drive to find parking. Now, Charles Frazier named it Lanikai in the 1920s. When he developed this corner of Kailua he was intending for the name to mean "Heavenly Waters," but in the Hawaiian language, when you put words together, it's usually the noun first and then the adjective.

So if he wanted to say Heavenly Waters, it should have been Ani, but that hasn't stopped Lanikai from becoming the brand that it is. Even when I say Lanikai I don't feel like I'm saying it like a Hawaiian. If I say Ani, there's a different inflection, but when I say Lankai it's not even a Hawaiian word. It's interesting.

Who shouldn't live in Lanikai

Obviously, anybody looking to live on or near the beach would love Lonnie Kai, but who shouldn't live here. I'd say if you have a lower tolerance for people walking around your neighborhood, beach goers that really just want to get to the beach, you might not want to live here. If you're looking for more of a secluded beach life, you'd want to look towards the North Shore. Also, if you're into nightlife or urban living, although Kailua Town isn't very far away, it's not necessarily walkable, it's not open late at night, you'd want to look more towards Diamond Head, Kaka'ako, or Kahala. Either way, if Koa or I can help you to get to know Lanikai a little bit more, or to look at the other options that fit your lifestyle, please get in touch with us at [email protected]. We'd love to help!
